This documentary was made by award-winning French filmmakers Jules and Gedeon Naudet, who simply wanted to make a film about a budding firefighter in New York and stopped filming the tragic event that changed our lives forever. The show features additional images and interviews with the heroic firefighters, rescue workers and the Naudet brothers, providing exclusive insights into their extraordinary first-hand experience of today’s events.

CBS aired on September 11 without advertising on March 10, 2002, marking the six months since the attacks. The CBS broadcast was hosted by actor Robert De Niro and was also repeated on its first anniversary. In 2002 alone, the film was broadcast in 103 countries. The documentary DVD was released nearby, although De Niro’s film was edited from the DVD release. CBS aired the film, again hosted by De Niro, on September 10, 2006, the night before the fifth anniversary of the attacks. However, this version contained updates from the main members of the 2006 documentary.

The film was known for its use of profanity, which under normal circumstances in US broadcast media would be censored by the broadcaster or the Federal Communications Commission. At the time of the broadcast, the FCC did not take action against the network for violating the rules of irregularity, as it would have negative connotations and would be interpreted as an erasure of history.

However, a recent federal court decision succeeded in putting a “temporary halt” to the FCC’s application of the rules of indecency. This allowed CBS and its subsidiaries to broadcast the documentary unedited and without fear of heavy fines.

On Sunday, September 11, 2011, CBS broadcast September 11: Ten years later, again hosted by Robert DeNiro. The screening was updated by brothers Naudet, Hanlon and CBS News producer Susan Zirinsky, with new interviews and films about the lives of those involved in the documentary ten years later. In addition to replaying the original documentary, the show also focused on the construction of the new One World Trade Center and the health issues that many firefighters face at Ground Zero. DeNiro was to be joined by brothers Naudet and James Hanlon, a former New York firefighter who became a film director who was also present that day. As with all previous broadcasts of the film, CBS issued repeated warnings to viewers before and during the broadcast.
